MCP, the Model Context Protocol, is a standard interface between an AI model and a business tool. Think of it the way you think of an HTTP API, except the tools on the other side are CRMs, calendars, payment systems, and document stores, all describing themselves in the same shape so any model can read and write to them.

It used to be that every AI integration meant a custom connector. The connector worked until the underlying tool changed an API field, then it broke, usually quietly. MCP removes most of that fragility.

The protocol is now mainstream. Anthropic released MCP in late 2024 and donated the specification to the Agentic AI Foundation, a Linux Foundation project, in late 2025.
